Jane Clarke is a highly experienced Continence and Pelvic Health Nurse Consultant with almost 30 years’ experience across community health, specialist continence services, chronic disease management, education, policy development, research, and clinical leadership. She is internationally recognised for her expertise in bladder and bowel health, pelvic floor dysfunction, and continence care across the lifespan.
Her clinical practice encompasses the assessment and management of complex continence conditions in both adults and children, including patients with neurological disorders, spinal injury, obstetric trauma, cancer-related complications, post-surgical dysfunction, disability-related continence needs, and long-term catheter management. She has significant experience supporting individuals with chronic and life-limiting conditions, as well as those requiring multidisciplinary rehabilitation and ongoing care.
Jane has particular expertise in neurological bladder and bowel dysfunction and the management of continence complications associated with conditions such as acquired brain injury, cerebral palsy, spinal pathology, neurodegenerative disease, and complex disability. She is also experienced in managing continence presentations arising from trauma, burns, invasive medical devices, pelvic surgery, oncology treatment, and obstetric injury.
Her background in primary and community care has informed a strongly person-centred and holistic approach to practice. She integrates functional physiology with behavioural, psychosocial, and environmental factors to deliver clinically rigorous and evidence-based assessments. She is recognised for her compassionate communication style and her ability to support patients and families through highly sensitive and distressing circumstances.
Jane’s professional standing is reflected in her international teaching, research, and policy contributions. She has presented at conferences including the International Continence Society, the World Federation of Incontinence and Pelvic Problems, the World Council of Enterostomal Therapists, and the European Association of Urology Nurse. She serves on the International Continence Society Nursing Committee and the Association of Continence Professionals, and contributes to the Continence Health Australia Resource Expert Panel. Her work includes peer-reviewed publications, guideline development, editorial commentary, and educational resource design, with contributions informing both national and international continence practice standards.
As an Independent Nurse Consultant, Jane provides specialist assessment, treatment planning, clinical education, and service development advice to healthcare organisations, community providers, and multidisciplinary teams. Her previous role as Director and Clinical Nurse Consultant of Highlands Care Services (Aus) involved leading specialist nursing services across primary and community care settings, overseeing clinical governance, quality assurance, staff training, and complex care delivery within NDIS and insurance-based schemes.
Earlier in her career, Jane worked as a Clinical Nurse Consultant for chronic and complex conditions, a Continence Clinical Nurse Specialist within community health services, and a community nurse delivering home-based care including catheter management, wound care, chronic disease support, palliative care, and frail aged care. These roles provided extensive experience across acute, subacute, and community settings and strengthened her understanding of the functional and psychosocial impact of continence disorders.
Jane holds a Master of Nursing, Master of Business Administration, and Bachelor of Nursing (Honours), together with specialist qualifications in continence management, primary and community health, menopause care, education, and chronic disease management. She has contributed to international guideline review committees, undertaken journal peer review activities, and co-authored paediatric continence guidelines published in the World Journal of Paediatrics.
In her Expert Witness practice, Jane provides independent expert opinion in cases involving bladder, bowel, and pelvic floor injury; continence mismanagement; catheter-related complications; delayed diagnosis and treatment; uro-gynaecological injury; obstetric trauma; neurological injury; and long-term continence care requirements. She prepares reports in accordance with Part 35 of the Civil Procedure Rules and understands her overriding duty to provide independent, objective, and unbiased evidence to the Court. Jane has undertaken formal Expert Witness training and accepts instructions from both Claimant and Defendant solicitors.
